Who are we?

Origins and development

The history of the Reformed Evangelical Church (ERE) La Chapelle in Saint-Hippolyte-du-Fort is closely tied to the rich Protestant tradition of the Cévennes, a region marked by centuries of reformed faith and religious resistance.

Born from the desire to maintain a distinct reformed evangelical identity, the community is today established on the Boulevard des Remparts in Saint-Hippolyte-du-Fort and affiliated with UNEPREF (National Union of Reformed Evangelical Protestant Churches of France). The responsible pastors are Paulo Sicoli (associate pastor) and Nicolas Thébault (interim pastor).

Local context: a Protestant town

98%

Huguenot in the 17th century

Saint-Hippolyte-du-Fort is known for its rich Protestant heritage. In the 17th century, the town was predominantly Huguenot, with approximately 98% of its population adhering to the Reformed faith. After the revocation of the Edict of Nantes in 1685, the original temple was destroyed and a fort was built to contain the local Protestants. In addition to ERE La Chapelle, the town is home to the Grand Temple, built between 1820 and 1822. It is one of the largest Protestant temples in France, characterized by its neoclassical architecture and impressive organ dating from 1854.
